Yorkshire Pudding Origins & Where to travel for the ultimate Yorkshire Pudding

The humble Yorkshire pudding, a British staple to the roast dinner but how did it come to be? For National Yorkshire Pudding Day UK, we’re exploring the origins of the famous Yorkshire pudding and how it has evolved in the modern age!

The History of the Yorkshire Pudding

The first documentation of the Yorkshire pudding was back in 1737! Originally featured in ‘The Whole Duty of a Woman’, the then-named dripping pudding recipe was named after the method of its cooking. The pudding would be placed under the spit where the meat was roasting, allowing it to soak up the delicious drippings.

In 1747, the Yorkshire pudding is popularised and got its classic name we all know. In this recipe by Hannah Glassesin in ‘The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Simple’ (a more widely published cookbook at the time), we see a recipe that involves mixing milk, eggs and salt with flour to make a pancake-like batter; much like in the first recipe this version also incorporates the use of meat drippings to enhance the flavour of the puddings.

The Yorkshire pudding originally began as a starter. In times of hardship when meat was expensive, this dish was often served with gravy to help fill people up. This was because it was made with basic and more affordable ingredients.

Skipping forward to 2007, the first National Yorkshire Pudding Day is celebrated in the UK and, here we are today, inspired by this interesting holiday to share some more venturesome Yorkshire dishes in comparison to the original!
