What’s the difference between Summer and Winter tyres? 

Summer and winter tyres are designed to perform optimally in specific weather conditions. If you travel in your motorhome or campervan all through the year, seasonal tyres may be an investment for you.

 

Winter Tyres

Winter tyres have a deeper, more distinctive tread pattern with more notches to improve traction on snow and ice. Winter tyres are designed for cold temperatures of below 7°C and are made up of a soft rubber compound meaning it has a better grip on colder roads. These tyres provide reduced braking meaning they are ideal for wet, snowy, or icy weather when you need to improve and increase your stopping distance.

 

Summer Tyres

Summer tyres are designed for temperatures above 7°C and use a hard rubber compound that provides optimal traction in hotter weather conditions. Compared with winter tyres, summer tyres have shallower, less distinctive thread patterns and smoother grooves.

When driving in hot weather naturally tyres will heat up. As temperatures rise during hot weather driving, the rubber softens to enhance the tyre’s grip on the road, while also preventing the tyres from seizing up or cracking.

 

The Alternative – All Season Tyres

All season tyres are a good medium between summer and winter tyres, although they don’t have as optimal performance as specialised seasonal tyres for hot and cold weather. Despite this, they still offer reliable traction and handling in various weather conditions, and have good adaptability, reacting quickly to fast-changing weather conditions.  These tyres are useful if you don’t have the space or ability to store a set of seasonal tyres while the other tyres are in use. However, although all season tyres are a good middle ground, if you’re travelling in more extreme weather conditions the appropriate seasonal tyres are strongly recommended.
