Romania and Bulgaria join the European Schengen Travel Zone

After a 13-year wait, Romania and Bulgaria have joined the European Schengen Travel Zone! From the 31st March 2024 Romania and Bulgaria have joined the largest free travel area in the world, with the addition of these two countries meaning the Schengen area will grow to 4.5 million square kilometres with a huge population of 450 million!

What is the Schengen Zone?

The Schengen Agreement is a treaty signed by 29 EU countries creating an area of free borderless movement. The Schengen Visa policy means that non-EU citizens can stay in any Schengen country or a combination of Schengen countries without a visa for up to 90 days within a 180 day period.

Does travelling to Romania or Bulgaria affect my 90-day Schengen travel allowance?

Although Romania and Bulgaria previously had their own independent travel allowance rules separate from Schengen, now that they are members of the Schengen travel zone any time spent staying in or travelling through these countries will count towards your Schengen 90-day allowance.

Can I travel to Romania and Bulgaria in my Motorhome or Campervan?

Yes! When touring Europe in your motorhome or campervan you can now enjoy visiting Romania and Bulgaria under Schengen travel!

However, you should be aware of the current restrictions that are in place. Although controls for air and sea borders have now been lifted, there are currently land and river border checks required, so if you’re driving into Romania or Bulgaria you should have your passport and relevant travel documents prepared.

Travel documents you should keep handy when travelling in the EU

  • Your passport
  • Your driving licence
  • Your Motorhome/Campervan insurance certificate
  • Travel Insurance Documents
  • Logbook V5C (or VE103 if you’re hiring a vehicle)
  • European accident statement

Ensure that you research the requirements for all the countries you are travelling to confirm you are prepared with the correct documentation.
