How To Protect Your Motorhome & Campervan From Theft: Top 10 Security Tips

1. Protect your keys

Avoid making it easy for thieves. Always remove keys from the ignition and store them in a safe place. Consider storing keys in a pouch to protect keyless entry fobs from relay attacks.

2. Make your vehicle extra secure

Fit steering wheel locks, gear locks, clutch claws and wheel clamps. They’re a great visual deterrent and are portable too.

3. Improve home security

Consider Installing bollards, PIR lights trained on your parking space which illuminate when potential thieves attempt to steal your vehicle and investing in your own CCTV, which can stream pictures to your smartphone.

4. Enhance Door Security

Criminals are increasingly attacking the manufacturer’s factory fitted driver’s door cylinder with screwdrivers, or lock picking devices, typically gaining access within seconds. Upgrading door security will help combat break-ins to your vehicle.

5. Vin Chips

These tiny ‘radio frequency identification’ chips are discreetly hidden randomly within the body and chassis of the vehicle. They record critical information unique to the vehicle’s 17 digital chassis number. They can be read by law enforcement officers from a distance and/or whilst the vehicle is travelling at speed.

6. Alarms & immobilisers

Are typically fitted as standard to all new vehicles. Immobilisers are frequently required by insurers for higher value vehicles. It is advisable that any immobiliser is Thatcham approved.

7. On-board diagnostic electronic port protection

These devices lock the OBD port of your vehicle to prevent unauthorized access to its systems via the OBD port. They help to prevent ‘keyless theft’ or ‘electronic compromise’.

8. Tracking Devices

Fitting a tracker enables your vehicle’s location to be monitored 24/7. When stolen, a signal is sent by remote control to a control centre, locating exactly where the vehicle is, thus helping the police to recover it.

9. Whole vehicle marking systems

Consider using a marking solution for your vehicle. This provides a unique identification which helps to deter thieves and aid recovery of your vehicle in the event of it being stolen.

10. Display deterrent signs

Whether you’ve fitted a tracking device, security marked your vehicle, or deployed another means of security, don’t forget to put a sticker in the window to warn potential thieves.
