Great Places to Visit In The UK In Your Motorhome

We’re well into summer and there’s no better time of year to set off on your travels in your motorhome. Europe is a popular destination amongst our motorhome and campervan owning customers, with Spain, France and Germany being the firm favourites, but why miss out on the beautiful places the UK has to offer? There’s so many amazing places of interest here in the UK and the motorhome and campervan life gives you full flexibility to explore them.

We’ve compiled a list of the best, most scenic places ideal for travelling to in your motorhome or campervan to help give you inspiration for the perfect staycation.

History Tour

Not only does the UK offer some truly spectacular scenery, which can be enjoyed in your motorhome, there is so much to see and do whilst on your travels. There are literally thousands of historic buildings dotted around the country. The good news is that a lot of these buildings and their grounds are open to tourists, providing visitors with a great opportunity to explore their beauty.

If you are intrigued by Great British history, a location of interest is Derbyshire, famous for its old style spa towns and country houses. It is a brilliant location for a holiday in your campervan, and according to Campsites.co.uk, there are over 80 motorhome campsites dotted around this beautiful county.

Derbyshire is also home to the spectacular mansion and gardens of Chatsworth House. This impressive historic building belongs to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. Construction of the original building started in 1552, but the house was subsequently rebuilt into the magnificent structure that can be seen today. Visitors are welcome to explore the amazing interior, including over 25 rooms in the house.

The estate appeals to historians and art fanatics alike, as this building features a Sculpture Gallery and a Painted Hall. Take a stroll through Chatsworth Garden, which is situated on 105 acres of land and features breath-taking water fountains and a rose garden that you can explore. There’s even a farmyard and a woodland playground which are perfect for a family-friendly day out.

Whilst you’re in Derbyshire, head over to the village of Crich located on the edge of the Derbyshire Dales. Here you will find the National Tramway Museum, home to an impressive showcase of old-style trams. This museum is based within a recreated period village, allowing you to take a step back in time and enjoy a truly unique experience. Indulge yourself at the old-style sweetshop or enjoy a pint at the Red Lion pub.

Norfolk is another popular destination for motorhomers and has an impressive array of historic buildings, including the famous Sandringham Estate and Norwich Castle. Sandringham House was built in 1870 and is the much loved country retreat regularly visited by Her Majesty the Queen. The large Edwardian house is located in Sandringham Royal Park which spans 243 hectares, so there’s plenty of to explore whether on foot or bicycle.  Take a stroll through the 60 acres of formal gardens which is home to two beautiful lakes. If you’re looking for an easier pace, you can enjoy a coffee in the courtyard at the Terrace Café or head over to Sandringham Restaurant for a spot of afternoon tea.

Scotland is a frequently visited destination for motorhome owners and it’s a great place to soak up some history too. There’s myth and legend and castles galore. Whilst visiting Scotland in your motorhome, a day or two spent exploring the capital city, Edinburgh is highly recommended. Edinburgh is steeped in history. There’s plenty to see and do in its medieval town and a few motorhome campsites positioned nearby, allowing you to park up and explore the local attractions. Whilst in Edinburgh, for historians, a trip to Edinburgh Castle is a well worth a visit. Visitors to this beautiful Scottish city can’t fail to see this historic landmark perched high up on a hill at the top of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. Take a stroll through the magnificent Great Hall, built for King James IV in 1511. Stop for a refreshment at the Tea Rooms for a unique afternoon tea experience.

Scenic Walking Routes

There’s a lot to enjoy when holidaying in the UK in your motorhome, including the many National Parks spread out around the country. These beautiful locations are dotted around some of the most spectacular driving routes and give you the chance to really get away from everyday life in your motorhome.

If you’re enjoying a staycation in the North of England, take a picturesque stroll through the Yorkshire Dales for a breath of fresh air. This National Park features stunning valleys, rivers and limescale formations including caves and waterfalls. Yorkshire is extremely well served with some really great motorhome campsites. Head over to the village Muker and surrounding area of the Yorkshire Dales for the best view of the stunning upland hay meadows, accessible from public footpaths and some really fantastic walks.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, travel 8 miles north to the town of Hawes and you’ll discover one of Yorkshire’s most popular fish and chip shops, ‘The Chippie’. Whilst in Yorkshire, don’t miss out on the Victorian spa town of Harrogate – a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Stop off for a spot of tea at Betty’s Tea Room and enjoy the delights of a traditional English experience.

The Peak District is a beautiful location for scenic strolls. Located in central England, there are plenty of walking routes to explore, including Kinder Scout – the highest point in the Peak District. This route allows you to experience breath-taking views of the many streams and moorland and is accessible from the villages of Hayfield and Edale. From Hayfield, make your way to Kinder Downfall to see the tallest waterfall in the Peak District National Park.

Another famous walking location in the Peak District is Mam Tor. This 517 metre high hill situated near Castleton is located on the edge of the Dark Peak and the White Peak, making for magnificent views of the limestone parts of the National Park. There are numerous motorhome campsites dotted around the Peak District, placing you on the doorstep of some of the best views in England.

Best Beaches

Cornwall is known for its brilliant sandy beaches and is a popular location for both motorhomers and campervanners alike. Whilst there are many spectacular beaches in Cornwall to visit in your motorhome, one beach in particular that stands out is Perranporth. This Cornish beach is an impressive three miles long and is a popular surfing location. According to Pitchup.com, there are over 10 motorhome campsites within five miles of this popular seaside town. Once you’ve soaked up the sun and enjoyed a dip in the sea, take a stroll over to The Watering Hole – a conveniently placed bar and restaurant located on the beach. Finish off your day in the village of Perranporth and take a trip to one of the many coffee shops for a traditional Cornish Cream Tea.

Rhossili Bay, Wales is a beautiful beach worth visiting in your motorhome. Located on The Gower Peninsula, just a short drive from Swansea, this eye-catching spot became the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s easy to see why this beach is one of the most famous in Wales – at three miles long, it makes for the perfect location for water sports and long walks. Park up at Rhossili Bay carpark where motorhomes are welcome. There’s plenty to see, including panoramic views and iconic limestone cliffs. If you head up the cliffs, you’ll find a selection of cafés where you can enjoy your afternoon tea with a spectacular view!

On the North Norfolk coast, you’ll find beautiful Holkham Beach – part of the Holkham Nature Reserve. This picturesque location offers miles of golden sands, pine woods and sand dunes. A short distance away is the delightful harbour town of Wells-next-the-Sea. Park up at Wells Beach carpark which is motorhome friendly and take a stroll down to the harbour where crabbing, sailing and other water activities take place. There are a variety of cafés and restaurants close to the harbour, including Wells Crab House where you can enjoy traditional local seafood dishes.
