Why would you want to travel abroad when there’s so much to do and see with your family in your motorhome or campervan in the UK. If you’re looking for some inspirational ideas for a UK holiday that you can really enjoy with the family, we’ve compiled some of our top picks that you might want to try. With so many campsites dotted around the country you’re never far away from a great site to pitch your motorhome which you can use as a base to have some family fun.

Campervan holiday activities for the adrenaline junkie

Our favourite adrenaline fuelled activity has to be the fastest zip line in the world in Penrhyn Quarry in Wales. The ride spans 1.5 kilometres and riders can achieve speeds of over 100mph. Whilst spectators are encouraged, there are 4 wires which means the whole family can enjoy the excitement simultaneously. If zip wires and heights are your thing, Go Ape is definitely worth a look in. With Go Ape centres dotted around the England, Scotland and Wales in close proximity to many motorhome and campervan owner’s favourite holiday locations, it’s a great place to stretch a few muscles as you climb from tree to tree.

Atlantic Surfing

Campervans and surfing go together like salt and pepper. You don’t have be a campervan owner though to experience the thrill of catching the perfect wave as the clean surf rolls onto the Atlantic coastline. Surfing is the perfect pastime for both campervan and motorhome owners alike. Many surfers head off to the UK surf hotpots in Cornwall such as Bude, Newquay or Sennen. However, often overlooked are the beaches of Wales. St David’s, the smallest city in the UK is also a great place to catch some clean waves whilst enjoying the perfect campervan holiday in beautiful Pembrokeshire. Surfing is a great family pastime that can be enjoyed in all weathers. With surf schools dotted along the UK’s Atlantic coastline that offer training packages that include board and wetsuit hire, you can learn how to ‘pop up’ like a pro.

Motorhome holidays for the film buff

A truly magnificent place to visit in your motorhome with the family and pets is the county of Northumberland. There’s miles of coastline to be walked and countryside to be explored. There are spectacular views that can be enjoyed from the comfort of your motorhome as you sip an afternoon tea. A huge draw for the children whilst visiting Northumberland in your motorhome are the castles which are steeped in history. One particular castle is Alnwick Castle, which is popular with historians and film buffs alike. Alnwick Castle has formed the backdrop of numerous films including Harry Potter’s Hogwarts, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and recently featured in Transformers:  The Last Knight. TV buffs will also recognise the magnificent Brancaster Castle in Downton Abbey’s 2015 and 2016 Christmas specials, which were also filmed at Alnwick Castle.

Scotland, another popular destination for motorhome and campervan owners is also a very popular setting for TV and film makers too. The children will definitely recognise Balamory which is a fictitious island setting for the same named TV series.  Set in the colourful and beautiful village of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull on the west coast of Scotland, Mull is definitely worth a stopover when exploring the Scottish Highlands and islands in your motorhome. Whilst on your travels you might recognise glimpses from the film version of Roald Dahl’s BFG. We’ve already mentioned Harry Potter, but whilst up in Scotland in your motorhome, film buffs – children and adults alike will love a ride on ‘The Jacobite’ steam train which is the actual train used for the fictitious Hogwarts Express. The 84 mile trip, which departs from Fort William passes over the magnificent Glenfinnan Viaduct, which featured in the Harry Potter Film. Whilst on route passengers will be able to take in some truly magnificent and breath-taking views including Scotland’s highest peak, Ben Nevis. The backdrop of the journey was also used in Highlander and Local Hero films.

A Tropical Rainforest on our Doorstep

Motorhome and campervan visitors to Cornwall looking for an escape from the beaches and idyllic coastal villages need to go no further than a trip to the Eden Project. This popular tourist attraction can be enjoyed whatever the weather. There are six main buildings on the site which include the spectacular Rainforest and Mediterranean Biomes. The Eden Project is a truly family friendly experience with a multitude of activities and things of interest for people of all age groups.  The Eden Project is more than just a garden experience and with some clever organisation motorhome owners can take advantage of one of the many events that are hosted on the site. A particularly popular attraction with campervan owners are the Eden Project gigs. Perhaps not as well known as Glastonbury as a music venue, the Eden Project has played host to a long list of musical talent over its 20 plus year history and is a popular attraction for motorhome owners visiting Cornwall.

Another highly popular Cornish garden experience enjoyed by motorhome owners is The Lost Gardens of Heligan. These gardens were literally lost and became overgrown around the time of the First World War. Steeped in history these gardens were returned to their former glory after being rediscovered by Tim Smith and John Willis in 1990. The gardens are set in idyllic Cornish countryside, close to the popular seaside town of St Austell. For motorhomers looking to immerse themselves in nature, there’s no better place to be on a warm summer’s day.
