Explore the UK’s Scariest Places – Halloween Motorhome Travel Ideas
Are you drawn to the spookier side of life? The UK boasts a wealth of devilish destinations that make it perfect for Halloween adventures in your motorhome.
Whether you plan brisk drive-by visits or dare to stay longer, you’ll find plenty of macabre spots to explore from Scotland down to southern England. Halloween traditionally marks the arrival of darker evenings, so make sure to pack all your cosiest items for an Autumn road trip.
We’ve conjured up a list of five scary sites to investigate this October – if you’re feeling brave enough, that is.
Pluckley, Kent
The pretty village of Pluckley is officially the most haunted in England, a title it was awarded by the Guinness Book of Records back in 1989. This reputation is justified by its 12 resident ghosts, of which countless sightings have been reported over the years.
Look out for a vengeful highwayman on Fright Corner and the so-called Red Lady who wanders the churchyard. Other ghouls you can expect to meet on your travels include phantom horses, ghostly monks and pub poltergeists. Or you could take a stroll through the temptingly nicknamed ‘Screaming Woods’…
Amateur ghost hunters still haunt these parts of the world, so you could even have some competition on your hands!
What else is in the area?
Pluckley itself is only small but the county of Kent has plenty more to offer. Once you’ve had your fill of frights, you could take a drive to the beaches and bays of Broadstairs or stop in at the delightful towns of Sandwich, Margate and Whitstable.
Pendle, Lancashire
The borough of Pendle is the place to park up if you fancy going on a witch hunt this Halloween. Pendle Hill played host to the infamous witch trials of 1612 in which 12 locals were charged with murder by witchcraft, 10 of whom were executed on the nearby moors.
Pendle Hill itself sits high above the surrounding Lancashire towns and is popular with both historians and walkers. If you want to mount a broomstick and blend the two, the Walking with Witches Trail takes in key sites including a macabre statue of one of the individuals accused, Alice Nutter.
What else is in the area?
If your walking legs aren’t quite satisfied in Pendle, drive north-west to the Forest of Bowland or enter the Yorkshire Dales to the north-east. The latter offers countless campsites to stop over for the night and head out again full of vigour the next morning.
Chillingham Castle, Northumberland
The clue is in the name with Chillingham Castle. This chilling site in Northumberland has seen numerous bloody battles in its near 700-year history and is said to be haunted by several spectres as a result.
Its spooky cast range from a pale lady who begs for water in the pantry to two men that often chatter in the chapel. The castle runs regular ghost-hunting tours to give you a chance of glimpsing these apparitions, so it’s worth timing your trip around this schedule.
You could even spend a night in one of the castle’s apartments if you fancy an eerie night away from the comfort of your motorhome.
What else is in the area?
Northumberland is ideal for road trippers. You won’t want to miss the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, which makes for an ideal spot to reflect on the fascinating history of Chillingham Castle and the wider area. The county also offers 40 miles of picturesque coastline as well as the famous 73-mile-long Hadrian’s Wall.
Museum of Witchcraft and Magic, Cornwall
This spellbinding and much-loved independent museum in Boscastle has welcomed curious visitors for over 60 years. Its walls are packed with odd statues, masks, books, artwork, dolls and other items that tell the story of Britain’s intriguing relationship with witchcraft.
The museum presents an accurate and impartial view of witchcraft and the time in which it rose to prominence on our shores. Who knows, you could even be converted…
Just a few miles down the road meanwhile is Merlin’s Cave, sitting below Tintagel Castle, which is rumoured to have once been home to the legendary wizard.
What else is in the area?
Cornwall has long been popular among motorhome and campervan owners for its spectacular coastlines, charming towns and laid-back way of life. The picturesque village of Boscastle itself is well worth spending the day in – particularly if you have an appetite for authentic cream teas!
Glamis Castle, Angus
Glamis Castle is another setting that seems idyllic but soon gets spooky come the 31st of October. Located close to the north-east coast of Scotland, its walls inspired Shakespeare’s famous tragedy of Macbeth and now endure regular ghost sightings.
Among those said to walk the castle’s corridors is a woman whose tongue was removed by an Earl to silence her. The Monster of Glamis, meanwhile, is the name given to the heir of Thomas Lyon-Bowes, who was banished at birth and has haunted a secret chamber ever since.
Should you feel as if you need a break from their cries, the castle’s gardens and grounds are also immaculately maintained.
What else is in the area?
Scotland is world-famous for its road trip routes and Glamis Castle offers opportunities in every direction. To the south are the eclectic Dundee, St Andrews and Edinburgh, while travelling north can take you through the Cairngorms National Park to the Scottish Highlands.
