Brecon Beacons National Park Rebrands to the Welsh name Bannau Brycheiniog
“An old name for a new way to be” Brecon Beacons National Park Rebrands to the Welsh name Bannau Brycheiniog
A leading camping spot in South Wales packed with exploration, awestriking views, and exciting activities for all is undergoing significant changes.
Attracting over 4 million visitors a year this captivating Welsh national park is home to many wonders, spanning a vast 520 square miles of natural countryside, lakes, mountains, and hills; Brecon Beacons is rich in extraordinary beauty. However, as a result of declining biodiversity and the climate emergency, the park plans by the year 2035 to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, introduce renewable green energy sources, as well as restoring its natural landscapes and strive for clean safe water environments to attract more wildlife.
Alongside these actions, the park best known as Brecon Beacons is changing its name to Bannau Brycheiniog. This is the national park’s Welsh name meaning ‘the Peaks of Brychan’s Kingdom.’ The renaming celebrates Wales’ historic culture and heritage as well as signifying the national park’s green rebrand. “An old name for a new way to be” expresses actor Michael Sheen in a short film announcing Bannau Brycheiniog’s new eco-friendly management plan.

Accompanying this change Bannau Brycheiniog is rebranding its logo. The former logo that depicted a burning brazier no longer reflects the values of Bannau and its battle against carbon emissions.
The park’s chief executive Catherine Mealing-Jones stated “As we went through the process of looking at the brand and thinking about the kind of park and organisation that we wanted to be, the old logo didn’t seem to make a lot of sense, we’re an environmental organisation so a giant, carbon-burning brazier isn’t really a good look,”
“If you look at our old logo, it’s always had the bilingual on it so we’re just really emphasising the Welsh side of that because we’re much more coterminous with the old kingdom of Brychan and hopefully it fits with our duty to and our wish to promote Welsh language and culture.”
