Autumn Staycations

Autumn Staycations – Why Autumn is the ideal time for a UK motorhome holiday

Ask motorhome and campervan owners, when is the best time for a road trip and a typical response will be during the summer months. But why should your motorhome adventure be restricted to the summer months alone? Modern motorhomes and campervans are built for comfortable travel all year round. Autumn is the perfect time of year to explore the UK in a home from home on wheels, whether you own a motorhome or are planning to hire one

When is the best time of year to travel in a motorhome?

Getting away from it all in the height of summer can be busy, especially with the recent boom in staycations. This is one of the reasons why autumn could become the best time of year to get away in a motorhome. Typically, there are fewer crowds, so whilst the weather may not be quite as warm as during the summer, you’ll be enjoying much quieter and generally less expensive campsites. Furthermore, you’ll be able to enjoy all of the wonderful tourist attractions that the UK has to offer in relative peace and quiet.

Autumn is the time of year when the daylight hours shorten, but this needn’t put a damper on your enthusiasm for a holiday at this beautiful time of year. Motorhome living in autumn is an absolute joy. Days can be filled with trips out exploring your local surroundings and evenings can be spent relaxing, enjoying wholesome food from within the comfort of your motorhome. Or, if you’re very lucky you may still be able to enjoy some alfresco dining in the great outdoors. Warm fleeces, cosy blankets and wraps will help to extend any time that you choose to spend outdoors. When it’s time to close the doors of your motorhome and jump into bed, you’ll find sleeping will be easier and more sound than in summer as the temperatures will be ideal for the perfect snooze.

Travelling in a motorhome in autumn

Autumn is the time of year when the leaves change colour, turning different shades of orange, brown and gold before they ultimately fall. For many motorhome travellers, autumn is their favourite time of year with the stunning scenery created by the changing flora – a truly spectacular time of year for motorhome and campervan owners alike to get out and explore the great outdoors. Daytime temperatures can be very pleasant and if you’re lucky, the weather can be dry which can make this time of year ideal for outdoor activities. Pop your cycles onto your motorhome cycle rack, or if you prefer, slip on your walking boots and you’re all set to explore.  The UK has plenty of beautiful forests and National Parks to visit where you can truly experience the magic of autumn. Read on to find some spectacular destinations that are definitely worth visiting this autumn.

The New Forest – Hampshire

If you’re looking for a location down south, the county of Hampshire is well worth a visit in autumn. Whilst spectacular in summer, the rural landscapes are equally as breathtaking in the later months of the year. There are plenty of campsites dotted throughout the county which makes it a great motorhome location. Hampshire boasts two National Parks and some excellent coastline. Whether you’re interested in wildlife or are looking for an attraction to suit the whole family, there’s always plenty to see and do.  Some of the popular attractions in and around the area include The National Motor Museum, Paultons Park – home of Peppa Pig World and Exbury Gardens & Steam Railway. No matter, what you’re interested in, there’s something to suit the wide and varied interests of motorhome owners for an autumn holiday in Hampshire.

Lake District

An all-year-round popular motorhome staycation destination, the Lake District really comes to life in autumn. Offering an abundance of campsites, surrounded by spectacular scenery, the Lake District is the perfect motorhome destination. The Lake District is England’s largest National Park and is home to England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike. So, if you like the great outdoors, there’s no better place to visit than the Lake District. For those looking for something less strenuous, there are plenty of tranquil villages to visit and some great places to eat and drink. With big skies and very little light pollution autumn in the Lake District is an ideal time to stargaze from the comfort of your motorhome with a warm drink or perhaps a glass of wine or two.

Snowdonia National Park – Wales

Wales is home to some truly magnificent roads for motorhome driving and some great campsites in picturesque locations. Snowdonia National Park is home to the highest mountain in Wales, Mount Snowdon and is one of the many spectacular autumn motorhome getaways Wales has to offer.  Snowdonia National Park is the perfect location for the outdoor enthusiast and is packed with plenty of activities to do and places to visit which are perfect for those looking for a bit more adventure to their motorhome holiday, such as Coed y Brenin which is famous for its mountain bike trials. If you’re looking for a less action packed getaway in your motorhome then why not check out some of the stunning forests located in North Wales – Penllergare Valley Woods boasts 12 square miles of woodland and Gwydir Forest Park, located right in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park are both great choices for an autumn staycation.

Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales are always a popular destination with motorhome owners. Scenic views made up of hills, waterfalls, lakes and caves, the Yorkshire Dales have plenty to offer motorhome owners looking for walking adventures. For those interested in geology there are a number of ‘show caves’ that can be visited by the public including White Scar Cave, Ingleborough Cave and Stump Cross Caverns. After an energetic day spent in the autumn air there’s nothing better than enjoying the warmth of a burning fire and some delicious food and drink in one of Yorkshire’s many great country pubs that will be sure to hit the spot. If you’re looking for more unique things to do, the Yorkshire Dales is also the home to the Wensleydale Creamery, which if you’re a cheese lover, definitely can’t be missed.
