The Sights of Serbia

Serbia may have a chequered history, but today this bustling, vibrant country is one of the highlights of visiting the Balkans.

During the 1990s, this part of former Yugoslavia was embroiled in a bitter civil war which lasted a decade. However, a lot has changed since then, and Serbia is now a modern, welcoming country with a mix of stunning scenery, fascinating landmarks and incredibly friendly people; the ideal place for your next motorhome adventure!

We have put together a list of some of our favourite things that Serbia has to offer to help get you inspired!

Topola

Deep in the heart of Serbia lies Topola. Part of the Sumadija region, this was the location chosen by the 19^th century revolutionary Karadjordje for his summer residence. Karadjordje is heralded as the founder of modern Serbia, and his home has since been turned into a museum, giving a real insight into Serbia’s fascinating history and that of the Balkans in general. His tomb can be found here in St. George’s Church, as well as the impressive mausoleum of the Serbian royal family. This region is best known for its fine wine, and each October in the village of Vinca they have a grape picking ceremony called Oplenacka Berba which is a great time to come and sample the previous year’s vintage.

The Resava Cave

A true natural wonder, this astonishing network of caves is over 2.8 miles long and runs 1.75 miles deep and is one of the oldest of its kind in Serbia. It was first discovered in 1962 and opened up to the public a decade later, giving everyone the chance to explore this marvel of nature. Within the warren of tunnels you will find vast halls, narrow channels, stalagmites and stalactites and some beautiful flowstone waterfalls. The different mineral makeups of the stones has led to coloured rock formations inside the cave, in yellows, reds and whites. Today it is a protected natural monument, as well as the surrounding acres of stunning landscape.

Kalemegdan Fortress, Belgrade

There are two great rivers which flow through Central Europe, the Sava and the Danube. It is the place where these two rivers meet that the Kalmegdan Fortress lies. Dating back until as early as the 3^rd century BC, this ideally located strategic site has withstood many attacks throughout the course of history from some of the world’s most powerful empires, including The Huns, Romans, Byzantines and Turks. There is a statue there today known as a Pobednik to mark the victories over the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empire during the Balkan Wars and WWI. No other site in Serbia has such historical significance, and this should definitely be a stop on your trip.

China Town, Novi Sad

Novi Sad is Serbia’s second city. Unlike other Chinatowns throughout the world, this one has absolutely nothing to do with China! Instead this is their new creative district, a wonderful mish mash of boat builders, cobbled alleyways, market stalls, musician’s spaces and secret eateries known locally as kafane. We would count this amongst the must see sites, because you want to get a fully rounded Serbian experience!
